This was my 4th trip to Nicaragua and the 3rd time staying at Hotel Chancletas over the last 5 years. In the surf community Chancletas is mainly known for the heavy beach break right out from called ‘The Boom’ ….as the name insinuates, it’s a pretty heavy wave has been known to break many boards and humble many traveling surfers over the years. Shoots, the first time I went there 4 years ago I snapped my Hayden Hypto Crypto clean in half on the second wave I paddled for and it was maybe head high, occ overhead! But don’t let that detour you from going! There are so many fun, offshore and clean days with barrels for days and not many people in the line up. There are also plenty of other waves in the area to explore and surf via boat taxi or a short local taxi ride. This particular trip I surfed 3 new waves in the area so that was pretty special to me. It felt like a totally new surf trip. The owners of Chancletas, Shay and Loretta have been there since 2003 and had their first guests in the hotel in 2004.

One of the biggest reasons I keep going back is because it’s such a mellow and friendly atmosphere. They don’t just treat you like some ordinary hotel, check in / check out guest. They take the time to get to know you and ask how you’re doing, if there’s anything they can help with….you name it and they are on it. For example, my boards showed up 3 days late this trip because American Airlines sent them to the Dominican Republic and the owner Shay was kind enough to let me borrow his own personal board, free of charge and was happy to do so. You don’t get that kind of generosity in many places. The staff is wonderful and all remembered me from my past trips over the last 5 years. It’s really cool meeting people and developing friendships like that when you’re traveling. So for me personally, when you combine fun waves out back, multiple other spots in the area to surf, friendly owners and staff, activities like inshore/offshore fishing, volcano hiking, Flora de Cana Rum factory tours, trips to the local towns to shop and eat lunch, Stand Up Paddle Tours, kayaking……and not to mention a pool and 2nd floor jungle yoga deck over looking the Pacific Ocean….the trip is a no brainer!!! I can’t wait to go back!
Cheers,
Shaun
