As if we needed any further photographic evidence, but this set of captures by Jon Carter shows the swell-drawing power of the Outer Banks in classic fall form. In this case, the same frontal system that lit up the Southside of Hatteras Island in the previous feature also produced enough energy to send smaller, but still fun, surf to the “In-Town” portion of the barrier island chain. You can bet Jon had to throw on a few extra layers shooting this sundown session from the beach as cold air blasted across the region from the northwest! In surfing, cold temperatures are definitely a fine-toothed comb as far as crowds go; so it’s always awesome to see the hardier souls of our community continue to reap what the ocean sows despite the challenging conditions. And it’s only getting colder…

Even with extreme swell angles from the south and north combined, the magic inside bowl of Avalon Pier came alive. Photo: Carter.
