Bioluminescence and The Surf & Adventure Camp Crew

An after work, impromptu camping trip turned out to be “the coolest thing I’ve ever seen,” as quoted by all of the S&A grinders that made the bike down to False Cape and discovered the bioluminescence. A crew of nine loaded up some Kona fat tire bikes and a beach cart full of camping and surf gear to make the 6.5 mile ride to the False Cape campgrounds. After camp was set up we headed down to the beach with intentions to enjoy the stars and sound of the ocean. As we made our way on to the beach we discovered the blue green, bioluminescent glow of the waves. Bioluminescence is caused by an algae bloom brought about by a red tide. The dinoflagellate are a marine phytoplankton that when disturbed emit a glowing blue color. A truly breath taking, natural sight.

I think I speak for everyone on the trip when I say that we were truly lucky and so stoked to have had the chance to see this phenomenon in person. The Sandbridge ecosystem is one of incredible diversity and beautiful scenery. I feel privileged to be able to embrace the landscape and experience it with fellow employees who share the thrill seeking adventure mantra.
