Photos & words by John Streit. The dog days showed up a month early this year. With an oppressive heat wave stifling the region with temperatures reaching 100 and humidity making it feel even worse. Powerful thunderstorms periodically cool off the terrain for a short time, but an afternoon of solstice sunshine cooks things up for another round of evening pop-ups. And as for the surf? Due to the overall southerly wind flow created by the Burmuda High has sent a background east-sooutheast groundswell to the region that has provided the occasional fun wave at the right spots when conditions come together. The morning of Friday, June 19 was one of the those days at Croatan Beach, where offshore breezes and a little help from high tide created some fun longboard and Beater lines. Of course, we all know the payoff is a couple months away when the tropics promise to be in full flare. But in the mean time, it’s wise to keep your surf skills strong by selecting the right equipment and taking advantage of what nature delivers. Travis Kesler. Photo: Streit. Conner Barnes.
